Now, we understand that our take on the Thoroughbred Industry is slightly different to many. We don't see an industry built around foggy mornings and misty mountains, pictures of lovely green grass too well manicured to ever let a horse actually graze on it, beautiful wooden fences painted annual with the rails affixed on the wrong side for the benefit of clients and the detriment of horses. A balance sheet filled with red ink, a huge tax loss year after year that eventually becomes unsustainable and a depreciation schedule that would scare an actuary to an early grave. We see a businessof value adding, of breeding a superior racehorse, a business in which the smart can actually turn a profit with a level of regularity. Profit and loss, risk/reward, sustainable growth, breeding a superior racehorse. Only yesterday we quipped to a client about them being better off selling a mare bought for $500 that had been value added to 100k, than being the breeder who buys a mare for a 100k and sells her for $500.

Which brings us to stallion selection. When choosing your stallion you must determine many things - to many to name here - but no matter what your criteria it simply must be born out by facts. We have waxed lyrical endlessly about Australian WFA winners by the end of their 3yo year from International pedigrees by Danehill as being the only GUARANTEED formula for stallion success in the country. 5 from 5 thus far, Redoutes Choice, Fastnet Rock, Commands, Flying Spur and Danewin. And now, the only other stallion meeting this criteria is about to have his first runners and they are showing this formula will continue with its perfect record.

We have told you previously about the great trial win by California Devil in Adelaide. Bred and raced by Michael Coleman, she is spelling and Michael hasgone out on a limb claimingthat he has a better one by California Dane at home. AndMichael isbooked in for next year already. Yesterday further enhanced the growing reputation. At Randwick Bede Murray stepped out a good looking colt named Cheerful Dane who impressed greatly. Official second, most people on track and those who saw it later swear that he won while being eased down after leading easily and running time quicker than most trials on the day. The relevant point being of course this guy can run, no doubt. Magic Millions also had their first breeze ups for their Ready To Run sale yesterday. Only 4 horses out of the countless 2yo's who ran up went quicker than the California Dane colt from Stop 'n' Go. Indeed 3 of California Dane's progeny broke the important mark of 11's for the furlong, certainly an impressive feat and one that shows that all of these horses can pick 'em up and put 'em down.

Two further things have emerged from all of this. Every trainer is singing from the same hymn sheet - these horses are professionals. Every time they ask them to do something they do it and do it very well, they are tractable and, interestingly, they are not being viewed as blinding 2yo's but as horses that will improve. What they are showing is natural talent but they will be better after a spell and in another prep. Wow. The other point that needs to be looked at is the horses we keep mentioning are not from 'Easter' pedigree mares, these are mares that any breeder can own and justify sending to this excitement machine. We have pointed out ad infinitum this year that people who made the good money from Redoutes Choice, Commands, Encosta De Lago, Zabeel etc were those smart enough to use them year 4 so this is your chance to capitalise on the promise being shown. There are some package deals, including agistment, still available.
